The Prime Minister has appointed Stephanie Flanders and Professor Fiona Macpherson as Trustees of the Kennedy Memorial Trust.

Both Ms Flanders and Professor Macpherson have been appointed as Trustees for a term of 5 years, from 1 October 2014.

Background

The Kennedy Memorial Trust was established in 1964 to administer money raised in the UK as a tribute to the late President John Kennedy. Part of the fund was used to create and maintain the Kennedy Memorial site at Runnymede, Surrey. The remaining money is used to provide Kennedy Scholarships, which enable British post-graduate students to study at Harvard and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

Trustees are responsible for the selection process for those scholarships and for managing the maintenance of the Kennedy Memorial in Runnymede.

Biographical notes

Stephanie Flanders is currently Chief Market Strategist for Europe and the UK with JP Morgan Asset Management. She was Economics Editor at the BBC from March 2008 until November 2013, having joined the Newsnight team in 2002. Stephanie read philosophy, politics and economics at Balliol College, Oxford and graduated with first class honours, after which she was a Kennedy Scholar at the Harvard Kennedy School for 2 years. She began her career as an economist with the London Business School and the Institute for Fiscal Studies before becoming a leader writer and columnist at the Financial Times in 1994. In 1997, she became speechwriter and special advisor to US Treasury Secretaries Robert Rubin and Lawrence H. Summers during the Clinton administration. Stephanie has also worked as a correspondent at the New York Times and was Principal Editor of the United Nations’ 2002 Human Development Report. Since 2008, she has been a Visiting Fellow of Nuffield College, Oxford.

Professor Fiona Macpherson is Head of Philosophy and Director of Research in Philosophy at the University of Glasgow, where she is also Director of the Centre for the Study of Perceptual Experience. She gained an MA from the University of Glasgow, an MLitt at the University of St Andrews and a PhD from the University of Stirling. She was a Visiting Fellow at Harvard University as a Kennedy Scholar, a Teaching Fellow at the University of St Andrews, and Rosamund Chambers Research Fellow at Girton College, Cambridge. While a faculty member at Glasgow, she has spent time as a Research Fellow at the Centre for Consciousness, the Research School of Social Sciences, Australian National University and as a Visiting Professor at Umea University, Sweden, and at the Institute of Philosophy, University of London. Fiona is Co-Director of CenSes: Centre for the Study of the Senses at the Institute of Philosophy, School of Advanced Study, University of London; Co-investigator on the Network for Sensory Research at the University of Toronto; a member of New York Institute of Philosophy’s Project on the Nature of Taste and an affiliate of the EXRE: Centre for Research on Mind and Normativity. She is also a member of the Arts & Humanities Research Council.
