Key player in nuclear industry expands North Wales base

James Fisher Nuclear (JFN) - a key player in the nuclear industry has chosen to expand its base in Wales, relocate to larger premises on Deeside Enterprise Zone and create 36 highly skilled jobs with Welsh Government support.

The c£1.5m investment in new premises and equipment is supported by £149,200 business finance from the Welsh Government. The expansion will bring the company’s head count up to 100 in Wales within the Deeside Enterprise Zone.

On a visit to the company in Deeside First Minister Carwyn Jones described it as an extremely important project secured for Wales.

The First Minister said:

“Wales was in competition with another site for this investment and I am delighted it will now go ahead here. The decision to expand in Wales has the potential to act as a catalyst to attract further investment by companies interested in the opportunities that the nuclear sector offers in Wales.

“This is of strategic importance as we are developing and building a strong supply chain to maximise all potential opportunities from the nuclear new build programme. JFN also generates a significant amount of supply chain work for other businesses in the locality and the expansion provides the potential for additional work.”

(JFN), a wholly owned subsidiary of James Fisher and Sons PLC, (a FTSE 250 Company), is an established supplier of high integrity services and equipment for operation in adverse environmental conditions. It employs highly skilled engineers capable of taking on some of the most complex engineering challenges.

Dr Paul Read, JFN Managing Director said:

“Our award-winning Radiation Calibration Service which supports customers nationwide is already located on the Deeside Industrial Estate.  This new facility adds significant space for our Non-Destructive Testing division to support our existing customers and expand our customer base.  It is also ideally positioned to support Aerospace customers at Broughton and Nuclear New Build in Wales.”

James Fisher NDT (JF NDT) offers a comprehensive range of services that cover the full spectrum of conventional NDT inspections and many specialist techniques. JF NDT routinely deploys inspection techniques based upon visual, radiographic, ultrasonic, eddy current, dye penetrant and magnetic particle inspection, taking care to ensure that the correct inspection approach is deployed for each application.  It offers component testing and plant inspection services either in-house or at customer's premises.

JF NDT currently operates from facilities in Queensferry and Deeside which are operating at maximum capacity, with no room for expansion or to deliver new contracts.

The new 26,500 sq.ft. premises on Deeside Industrial Park will enable the company to invest in digital radiography equipment, reconfigure the factory floor layout to increase efficiencies, provide space for growth as well as office accommodation for staff, with room for a conference room and facilities for visiting companies.

Alec Morton, Director NDT and Instrumentation said:

“As well as having space for our current operations, we now have the space to set up a state-of-of the art training and development facility.

“As well as enabling us to do training in-house, we have an improved capability to develop new techniques for our customers.”

The Deeside location is ideally located to take advantage of new build opportunities proposed for Wylfa and Hinkley Point. The company is already involved in the decommissioning of old plant across the UK including Trawsfynydd.

JFN has a varied blue chip customer base with clients including Airbus, Magnox, Nuclear Decommissioning Authority, Tritech, Williams Lee (Bentley), Rolls Royce, Toyota and Jaguar Land Rover.
