LC: Firearms recommendations become law

The law around firearms has been strengthened yetserday thanks to recommendations by the Law Commission.

The Policing and Crime Act 2017 has now received Royal Assent. Part 6 of the Act implements the recommendations of the Law Commission’s Firearms Report that was published at the end of 2015.

As a result the law is now:

  • clearer and easier to use for investigators, prosecutors and those who legitimately use and own firearms; and
  • takes account of the technological developments that have taken place since the Firearms Acts were enacted.

Law Commissioner for Criminal Law Professor David Ormerod QC said:

“The Royal Assent of the Policing and Crime Act 2017 brings much needed clarity to the law around firearms.

“Our recommendations adopted through this Act provide robust solutions to the most pressing problems in firearms law.

“I’m pleased that they will ensure public safety is better maintained and provide clarity for those who both enforce the law and rely upon it for their hobbies and livelihoods.”
