LGA responds to Arts council's £2.6 million funding for free Wi-Fi in libraries

Cllr Ian Stephens, Chairman of the LGA's Culture, Tourism and Sport Board responds to the Arts Council's announcement that libraries are to receive over £2.6 million in funding to provide free Wi-Fi to users.

"This announcement will mean councils can support even more residents and businesses to get online at public libraries. From helping people to find jobs, supporting new businesses and staying connected with family and friends, getting online can bring many economic and social benefits.

Public libraries are welcoming and trusted places for people to use the internet and develop their digital skills. This funding will provide a welcome boost to that activity and will be essential for libraries' increasingly important role as community hubs, where local people can use a wide variety of services ranging from homework clubs to public health and business advice."
