LGA responds to Prime Minister's 2020 Dementia Challenge

LGA Community and Wellbeing spokeswoman, Cllr Izzi Seccombe said: "Councils are committed to help realise the ambition of the Prime Minister's 2020 Dementia Challenge."

"Councils are committed to help realise the ambition of the Prime Minister's 2020 Dementia Challenge.

"Dementia is a devastating illness which can have a huge impact on people, their friends, and families, and each and every part of society has an important role in ensuring people with dementia can live life to the full for as long as possible.

"We need to shift the focus away from treating dementia to how we can enable those living with dementia to lead fulfilling lives close to their families.

"Councils are playing a leading role in improving the lives of people with dementia and their families through all of the services they provide, including housing, transport, leisure services, social care, public health and community safety. We are providing care and support after a diagnosis, offering comprehensive information and advice on care options, raising awareness of the condition and transforming areas into Dementia Friendly Communities.

"Working with community groups and volunteers, we are determined to continue the progress we have made in improving the quality of care for dementia sufferers."

Notes to editors

The LGA launched new guidance for councils on becoming Dementia Friendly Communities in 2015 and is an active member of the Dementia Action Alliance.
