LGA responds to Respublica report on care home crisis

Research reporting that a crisis in care homes will cost the NHS £3 billion is evidence of why the issue must no longer be ignored, says Cllr Izzi Seccombe, LGA spokesperson for Community Wellbeing.

She said:

"This research is evidence of why the social care crisis must no longer be ignored. We are heading towards a devastating care home collapse. It is unacceptable to leave our elderly friends and family living in a care limbo, not knowing where they will live if a care home closes and worrying about the care they rely on.

"The adult social care system is in crisis and behind the numbers it is the people who rely on care to go about their daily lives who will feel the impact through the unnecessary stress and upheaval this could bring.

"Health and social care leaders widely recognise that a properly funded social care system is essential to alleviate the pressures on the NHS. Without proper funding councils are going to be left struggling to keep people out of hospitals and in their own homes and communities.

"It is imperative that the Government fully addresses this in the Spending Review before we see a care disaster unfold."
