Yesterday the Houses of Parliament announce the launch of Magna Carta and the emergence of Parliament, a digital resource for children and young people. It was developed in partnership with The National Archives.

Part of the 2015 Parliament in the Makingprogramme, it marks the 800th anniversary of the sealing of Magna Carta and the 750th anniversary of Simon de Montfort’s parliament. This resource is aimed at Key Stage 3 and upwards, focusing on the development of Parliament and its relationship with Magna Carta between 1215 and 1297.

The resource reveals 30 important documents using digitised images, translations and audio transcripts. Students produce a chronicle account based on document analysis and video interviews with leading characters including King John, Simon de Montfort and Eleanor of Provence as well as guidance and support from the famous monk-chronicler, Matthew Paris.

Chief Executive and Keeper of The National Archives, Jeff James, said: ‘This Magna Carta and the emergence of Parliament resource will offer students a unique opportunity to explore our wonderful medieval collection. The significance of Magna Carta, both in the 13th century and beyond, lay in the fundamental concept that kings were not above the law, and in so doing it laid the foundation for the future development of constitutional government and the rule of law around the world.’
