Local Government Diversity Champions celebrated

Public Services Minister Leighton Andrews AM has praised councillors committed to encouraging wider representation of the communities they serve.

At an event to celebrate the Diversity Champions in Cardiff Bay, the Minister highlighted the need for local government to better reflect the electorate.

Leighton Andrews said:

“The 2012 survey of candidates and elected councillors at local elections showed the majority of councillors to be over 60, just under three-quarters to be male, 99% white and only 31% in full or part-time employment.

“Councils benefit from having men and women of all ages, ethnicities, social classes and backgrounds representing their communities. We need the council chambers of Wales to reflect the population of Wales in all its diversity.

“It’s very easy to lay-out the challenges, but much harder to fix the problem.

“We have already made limited steps to improve diversity. I see you as a key part of the next phase of action. Diversity Champions must be trail blazers, role models and advocates, driving this agenda forward.

“For my part, and that of Welsh Government, I intend to ensure Local Government reform drives improved diversity. Local Authorities and political parties must work harder to encourage more diverse candidates at local elections and make Local Authorities more flexible and supportive places to work.

“But this enthusiasm and commitment must result in action. Achieving diversity of representation in our councils which reflects our local communities will need action from us all as individuals, our Parties and Local Authorities across Wales.

“Thank you for taking on this role and embracing the diversity agenda in Wales.”
