London to Lahar

Five London organisations will be setting off to share stories, connect communities and enrich their artistic practice in the latest round of our fund, Reimagine India.

This exciting programme helps English artists and organisations work with their counterparts in India to exchange ideas, develop partnerships abroad and export their work.

With over £321,000 between them, five London organisations will be collaborating on projects to take world-class performances to rural communities beyond India’s metropolitan centres.

We are so excited to make this project happen together, to share our different practises, to make music together, and to share this with the world!

Joyce Wilson, London Area Director, Arts Council England, says:

“These projects will create real dialogue not just between English and Indian artists, but between communities across the sub-continent. I am excited to see how India’s vast cultural landscape influences practice in the UK, and how it will enrich the artistic offering for audiences here.”

The projects

The Roundhouse will be working with Dharavi Rocks, a percussion band music collective of 8-23 year olds from the large Dharavi slum in Mumbai. With £36,000 from the Arts Council, The Roundhouse and Dharavi Rocks will bring together young and professional musicians in Mumbai and London to create original, socially engaged music. This will culminate in a performance at On Mass at the Roundhouse in March 2017, live streamed worldwide. Watch On Mass 2015 below.
