London’s bus service to get bigger and better

More than 500 extra buses are to run on London's streets to meet the rising demand and growing population in the Capital. By 2020/21, they will provide almost three million more journeys every week.

Along with the Mayor we set out plans for the major new investment this week and also announced that £200m should be spent on bus priority schemes for local roads and £25m on bus driver training.

Mayor Boris Johnson said: 'This major new investment will help meet the demand of the city's rapidly growing population. It will also support regeneration of key growth areas - ensuring Londoners have a regular and reliable bus network to get them to jobs, schools and hospitals in every part of the Capital.'

London's bus network carries 6.5 million passengers every day and is already one of the most extensive and accessible anywhere in the world. With the Capital's population growing faster than any other European city, the investment in buses is needed to keep pace with demand.

The extra vehicles will boost services, provide better bus access in Outer London and improve transport connections to growth areas, such as Barking Riverside and Elephant and Castle. The plans are included in our Business Plan which sets out what will be delivered to support the Mayor's Transport Strategy until 2020/21.

More green buses for the Capital

New Routemaster buses are being introduced on to another London route this weekend, reducing CO2 emissions on the streets.

Route 137, which runs between Oxford Circus and Streatham Hill via Marble Arch, Knightsbridge, Sloane Square and Battersea Park, is the tenth service to convert to the vehicles.

The buses will start running on Saturday and the entire route will operate with them by the end of this month.

More than 300 New Routemasters currently operate in London. The latest conversion is another step towards achieving a cut in CO2 emissions of 27,500 tonnes a year by 2016.
