Maesteg’s new GP surgery points the way to the future, says Health Minister

Health and Social Services Minster Mark Drakeford has praised staff working at a new GP surgery which provides primary care services for people living in Maesteg during a visit to the practice yesterday (Thursday October 8).

The Bron y Garn surgery opened its doors earlier this year after an extensive redevelopment. The new premises are now located in Maesteg Community Hospital after the original surgery became too small for the needs of the practice.

The extra space and modern facilities have allowed the services, which are delivered by a the wide range of healthcare specialists, including heart failure clinics and screening services, to be provided from one surgery. The surgery has also become a training practice with one trainee already in residence and two more due to start in February 2016.

The Welsh Government’s plans for primary care sets out how people will receive care and support from a wider range of professionals working as a co-ordinated and integrated team, made up of GPs, nurses, pharmacists, midwives, health visitors, dentists, optometrists, physiotherapists, therapists, healthcare support workers, social workers and third sector workers.

Professor Drakeford said:

“Bron y Garn is a good example of how primary care is changing with doctors, nurses and a range of other healthcare professionals working together to provide the right care for people at the right time in their local community.

“It is providing a range of services under one roof and is training the next generation of healthcare professionals.

“The Welsh Government is investing £40m this financial year in primary care services such as these to provide more care closer to people’s homes - £4m
of this has been made available to Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University Health Board.”
