Mary Rose museum reopens for a 21st Century audience

The iconic Mary Rose Museum in Portsmouth re-opens on 20 July and will use investment from the Arts Council to digitise its archaeological archive.

Closed for redevelopment since the end of last year, the Mary Rose museum has undergone a transformation that includes stunning panoramic views of the ship from all nine galleries through floor-to-ceiling glazing on the lower and main Decks.

A £90,000 grant from the Art Council’s Designation Development programme will allow The Mary Rose at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard to start digitising its archive to preserve the museum’s memories forever.

The funding will support the museum, which has just relaunched in planning how to best transfer archaeological documents and photographs into a digital format.

Sally Tyrrell, Head of Development at The Mary Rose Trust, said: “Our archive is currently largely paper based and extends from archaeological drawings to videos, from dive logs to photographs.
