Met Office explains the latest research into the forces behind extreme weather to delegates at a winter road industry conference.

Winters are often a difficult time on the UK's roads. This week the Met Office is explaining the latest research into the forces at work behind extreme weather to delegates at a winter conference for the road industry.

Met Office Applied Scientist, Ben Evans, will be on the Met Office stand to talk to delegates at the UK's largest dedicated winter maintenance event, Cold Comfort 2014, from the 30 September - 1 October at Manchester Central. The Met Office is leading the way in the UK when it comes to translating new research into a format that will help operational services within the road sector.

At the stand, delegates will have the chance to view demonstrations of operational products including OpenRoad, an online weather visualisation tool, and Route Based Forecasting, innovative, route-based forecasts providing weather information for individual routes within a network. Such services provide local authorities and transport agencies with the ability to identify specific problem areas on routes and tailor treatment accordingly, saving time and money in treatment during the season. The team from the Met Office will be updating customers on new developments that will soon be available to the road market. The Met Office is investing in its R&D to provide their customers with the best meteorological advice to keep road networks safe and open.

There will also be the opportunity to find out about our range of IHE (Institute of Highways Engineers) and CIHT (Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation) accredited weathertraining courses.
