Minister announces funding to support information and advice services

Communities and Tackling Poverty Minister, Lesley Griffiths, has yesterday announced £23,500 to improve the local advice and information services available for families.

The Family Information Service (FIS) puts families and carers across Wales in touch with local experts who provide free help and support on a range of topics, including childcare, health, training, leisure services and finances.

The funding announced yesterday will strengthen and enhance the work of the FIS. It will fund high quality, consistent national training to FIS professionals, information booklets for parents on childcare and finances, and a national conference to strengthen the links between the FIS and Youth Information Service.

Announcing the funding, the Minister said yesterday:

“In today’s difficult economic times, services which provide help and support for families, who may be struggling to cope, are more important than ever before.

"The Family Information Service in Wales provides high-quality information and advice on a wide range of topics. I would encourage all families and carers to contact their FIS to find out about the services available in their area.

“The funding I have announced today will improve and enhance the essential support the FIS provides to thousands of Welsh families the length and breadth of Wales.”

Alma Belles, Manager Wrexham Family Information Service, said:

“Families across Wales face complex challenges around issues such as family finances, housing, childcare and parenting and many parents don't always know where to start looking for support.

“Friendly and professional Family Information Service teams in all areas of Wales provide outreach services and support families to find relevant information and local services that can help them, especially when parents find it difficult to access services and information themselves.”
