Foreign Office notes worrying UNHCHR report showing deterioration in the human rights situation in Crimea and eastern Ukraine. 

A report from the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights has shown an “alarming” deterioration in the situation in human rights in Crimea and eastern Ukraine.

In response, David Lidington, the Minister for Europe, said:

We pay tribute to the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights who has produced a comprehensive and independent report that highlights the alarming human rights situation in Crimea and eastern Ukraine. We support the UNHCHR’s call for the end of provocative or intolerant actions.

We are gravely concerned by the situation in eastern Ukraine and the impact this is having on the protection of human rights. The illegal seizure of public buildings in the east of Ukraine by armed groups as well as abductions, arbitrary detentions, intimidation and harassment of civilians and journalists is appalling and must stop. The human rights situation in Crimea and the on-going harassment of Crimean Tatars is also deeply concerning, and we are following the situation very closely.
