Minister sees how Wrexham is taking action to tackle hate crime

Minister for Communities and Tackling Poverty, Lesley Griffiths, will visit the People’s Market, Wrexham, this weekend to see first hand the work taking place in the region to raise awareness of hate crime.

The community event on Saturday comes at the end of a week of activity across the length and breadth of Wales to promote tolerance and encourage people to report hostility and prejudice as part of Hate Crime Awareness Week, with the message "see it, hear it, report it".

Stalls will be set up in the People’s Market to showcase the good work being undertaken by Wrexham community groups to raise awareness of hate crime and share good practice.

Earlier this week, the Minister chaired the first meeting of an Independent Advisory Group to advise on the impact of the Welsh Government’s polices to address the issue.

The Welsh Government is working to tackle hate of all kinds including race, religion, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity and age, and has three main aims - to prevent hate crime, provide support to victims and improve the multi-agency response.

Minister for Communities and Tackling Poverty, Lesley Griffiths said:

“Hate crime is a shocking and inexcusable offence which has no place in Welsh society – I am determined to tackle it head on.

“I am working with communities across Wales to increase greater awareness of hate crime and reporting. It is important we can all make a difference to ensure hate in any form is tackled. I would encourage victims to contact the Police or to access the Welsh Government funded National Hate Crime Reporting Centre through Victim Support Cymru.

“I am pleased to see Wrexham taking action on tackling hostility and prejudice. There is great partnership working between organisations across the region to increase people’s confidence in reporting and promoting diversity. Saturday will be an opportunity for me to learn more about the good work being undertaken and I encourage everyone in the community to come along to this great event.”
