Minister visits Aberconwy Domestic Abuse Services’ Llandudno Refuge

The Minister for Local Government and Government Business, Lesley Griffiths AM, has spent time with women and children fleeing domestic abuse.

Llandudno refuge is run by Aberconwy Domestic Abuse Service (ADAS). When the group first started as Aberconwy Women's Aid it only provided support for females victims. However, the organisation recognised a growing need to support male victims. To reflect this they changed their name, constitution and aims and objectives in 2010.

Visiting the refuge on Thursday July 24, the Minister saw the essential assistance offered to vulnerable people.

Lesley Griffiths AM said:

“Effective services for victims and their children fleeing domestic abuse are vital. I am very pleased to have the opportunity to see this excellent facility and witness the admirable work undertaken here.

“At the end of June, I introduced the Gender-based Violence, Domestic Abuse and Sexual Violence (Wales) Bill into the National Assembly.

“The provisions in the Bill are intended to ensure a focus across the public sector on the prevention of the issues of gender-based violence, domestic abuse and sexual violence, the protection of victims and the support for those affected by such issues.

“The difference this refuge makes to the lives of the people it helps cannot be underestimated.”
