Ministers to mark Holocaust Memorial Day on 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau

First Minister of Wales Carwyn Jones and Minister for Communities and Tackling Poverty Lesley Griffiths yesterday attend Wales’ national commemoration of Holocaust Memorial Day in Cardiff.

Holocaust Memorial Day honours the survivors and remembers those who have lost their lives in the Holocaust and subsequent genocides. This year’s commemorations fall on the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau.

A central part of the event will be a candle lighting ceremony where Holocaust survivors living in Wales will pass a candle to pupils from Newbridge School in Caerphilly. They will be lit from a special 70th anniversary candle created by world-renowned artist and sculptor Sir Anish Kapoor.

The ceremony is part of a national initiative that sees 70 specially designed candles at Holocaust Memorial Day events across the UK.
