Mobile Services and Apps are growing in popularity, but could they go further?

Facebook's WhatsApp and Google's Gmail now have more than a billion monthly users highlighting the popularity of Mobile services and applications.

It has been revealed that both Facebook’s WhatsApp instant messaging app, and Google’s Gmail service, now have in excess of one billion monthly users. These are huge figures, covering a seventh of the world’s population.

These figures demonstrate how mobile services and applications, enabled by cloud technologies, are continuing to change the way we communicate and organise ourselves. The accessibility, variety and convenience of these types of services allow us to become far more agile and efficient in our daily lives. We are able to access our data in real time from a distance when on the move meaning we can respond to events as and when they happen. It is no wonder that mobile services only continue to grow in popularity.

These figures are also encouraging for the future of the Mobile services and applications industry as they will no doubt draw competitors into the field, leading to further innovation in the way only tech companies know how.

While it is fantastic that these apps, and others, have become so popular with people realising the benefits of embracing mobile services, techUK see scope for organisations across a number of sectors, including healthcare, finance, energy and utilities, to further benefit from the value of mobile services and applications.

As part of its Cloud and Mobile Services Programme techUK will be holding events during 2016 to explore the ways in which Mobile services and applications can continue to add value to the UK across different sectors. techUK members interested in being involved in these sessions and would like more information about techUK’s work in this area should contact Jeremy Lilley.
