Monitor appoints senior patient and clinical representative

Health sector regulator Monitor has strengthened its senior team by appointing Professor Hugo Mascie-Taylor as Medical Director and Executive Director of Patient and Clinical Engagement.

Hugo Mascie-Taylor has a strong clinical background, having worked within the NHS as a Clinical Director, Medical Director and a Director of Commissioning. For ten years he was Executive Medical Director of Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust, acting as Chief Executive for two periods of time. He was also Medical Director at the NHS Confederation.

Hugo is currently a Trust Special Administrator at Mid-Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust, working to ensure that services at Cannock Chase and Stafford Hospitals continue to operate for patients into the future.

At Monitor, Hugo will be responsible for providing clinical advice to the Board and executive on a number of issues including reconfigurations, interventions and transactions. His role is to ensure that Monitor gets input from clinicians and patients to its decisions so that they are in the best interests of patients.

Hugo will be starting work at Monitor on a part time basis, on Thursday 1 May, but will continue to work as a Trust Special Administrator at Mid-Staffs, providing as much input as is necessary, until the trust is dissolved.

Hugo Mascie-Taylor said today:

"I’m pleased to be joining Monitor and will work hard to make it as effective an organisation as possible.

"My role will include advising the Board on clinical issues to ensure that decisions are made in the best interests of patients."

David Bennett, Chief Executive of Monitor added:

"Hugo brings with him a wealth of clinical experience and has served at the highest levels within NHS trusts and at a national level. He will ensure that we continue to put patients at the heart of what we do and I look forward to working with him."
