Museums economic impact report published as we announce £17.5 million of new investment in English museums

108 organisations have been successful in the latest round of the Museum resilience fund, on the day we publish a report which finds English museums contribute £1.45 billion to the national economy. 

New report: The Economic Impact of Museums in England

Museums have a major impact to local and national economies. With continued support from Local Authorities, DCMS and other public and private funders, museums can play an ever more important role in our economy and communities. This report finds that the museums sector:

  • generates £2.64 billion in income
  • contributes £1.45 billion in economic output to the national economy
  • employs a minimum of 38,165 people
  • is made up of approximately 2,635 organisations running 2,720 sites across England
  • is estimated to generate £3 of income (including earned income, income from investments, grants from charities and foundations, and donations etc.) for each £1 of public sector grant

Museum resilience fund

The Museum resilience fund aims to support a step change for the museums sector by enabling museums to become more sustainable and resilient businesses. The programme focuses on any gaps (geographical or otherwise) or development opportunities across the sector, recognising that excellence and the potential for excellence can be found in museums of all sizes. Some of the successful applicants are:

North
More than £3.7 million has been awarded to 27 museums in the North. The successful museums include seven in the North East, including Stockton Library & Heritage Service receiving £76,920; seven in the North West including Gawthorpe Textiles Collection receiving £87,120; and 13 in Yorkshire, including Kirklees Museums and Galleries receiving £348,576.

Midlands
More than £4.2million will be shared between 19 organisations throughout the Midlands benefiting organisations with both a regional and national focus. Amongst the successful applicants are Avoncroft Museum of Historic Buildings, the Heritage Motor Centre in Gaydon, Rutland County Museum and Oakham Castle, and Nottingham’s Museum of Archaeology at Lakeside. 

London
Three museums in London will benefit from an investment of nearly £1.5million. The successful museums include the London Transport Museum, which will receive £844,519 for a comprehensive programme of organisational development, and the Geffrye Museum, which will receive £506,786 to support continued growth and innovation at the museum. A further 15 museums in London will receive funding of around £1.5million for projects with a national reach and impact or for their work as a Subject specialist network.

South East
24 museums across the East and South East of England are to benefit from an investment of more than £3.1 million. The successful museums include Colchester and Ipswich Museums Service, which will receive £666,244; Chatham Dockyard, which will receive £263,000; and Peterborough Museum and Art Gallery, which will receive £152,560. A further three museums across the regions will receive funding for projects with a national reach and impact.

South West
Funding of nearly £2.5 million has been awarded to fifteen museums across the south west. Amongst other projects Poole Museum Service has been awarded £473,703 and Hampshire Cultural Trust has been awarded £885,500 to support their Kick Start Project, delivering a transformational programme of work to take local authority museum services to a sustainable operating model.
