NHS Confederation: Learning from New York’s Medicaid programme

Keeping quality high and costs low is a common yet challenging goal across healthcare organisations. For the Medicaid programme in New York, which provides funding for medical and health-related services for people with low income, it was all the more challenging - the state’s spending for its population was the highest in the US, at $50bn a year and rising.

Under Jason Helgerson’s direction, innovative thinking and partnership working led to a remodelling of care delivery that has achieved a steady fall in spending per patient and a decline in spending overall.
