NHS Confederation - Response to QualityWatch Winter Pressures report

Ongoing pressures on urgent care services are symptomatic of wider pressures across health and social care.

In response to the Quality Watch winter pressures report, Dr Johnny Marshall, Director of Policy, NHS Confederation said:

“This report reinforces what our members have been telling us, that it’s winter all year round when it comes to demand for urgent care. Ongoing pressures on urgent care services are symptomatic of wider pressures across health and social care. We need an end to the “sticking plaster” solutions that make delivering excellent care to patients a constant challenge for our members.

We need to look beyond the hospital walls and see what support people need in their homes and communities to help them stay well for longer. All too often, older people are forced to go to A&E because the alternative services that would help them be cared for at home are not available at the time they need them. Our Commission on improving urgent care for older people identifies eight key principles for developing joined up, personalised and proactive care which will help alleviate pressure on our urgent care system.”
