NHS Confederation - The Government must be honest about NHS and social care funding

NHS Confederation chair Stephen Dorrell, who gave evidence to the inquiry, responded to a letter to the Chancellor from Dr Sarah Wollaston and a number of members of the Health Committee in relation to the committee’s inquiry into NHS finances,

“We welcome the important points made in Sarah Wollaston’s letter about the need for clarity around health funding and capital investment, as well as action on social care and public health. The letter underlines the breadth of the challenges facing the health and care system and the opportunity afforded by the Autumn Statement to tackle these issues.

“The NHS Confederation has long argued that it is misleading to suggest the NHS budget is being protected when the same is not true of social care and public health.

"In the past few weeks a string of highly reputable health organisations have spoken of the enormous strains on the system. This is impacting on staff morale and most importantly on the care available to those who need it most.

“The Government must be honest with the public about exactly how much it is spending on the NHS and social care. Only by providing this clarity can it ensure the system is sustainable for future generations.”
