NHS Confederation response to the rise in CQC fees

Rob Webster, Chief Executive of the NHS Confederation, has expressed concern about the increase in Care Quality Commission fees.

“This major hike in fees will leave a sour taste for our members, who will not be able to recognise how their views were reflected in the final decision taken.

“This fee increase and the stated reality that the Spending Review settlement requires a two year recovery period clearly risks jeopardising the goodwill of our members towards the CQC. Local NHS leaders know themselves that consultations must not be tick-box exercises and the CQC must ensure that any further consultation with the people who will now fully pay for its services will involve genuine engagement with the system.

“Much faster progress towards ensuring value for money from CQC’s new approach to inspections is essential, as well as far greater consistency between the different national bodies in the requirements they place upon the NHS.

“Providers and commissioners across the NHS are committed to delivering high quality, safe care. They are working within ever-tightening finances and need an efficient and effective regulator. Our members must have a stronger voice in helping shape regulation so that it works efficiently to add value to care delivery and supports them to maintain the highest standards for patients in these unprecedented times.”
