NHS England’s Handbook directs local organisations to Interoperability Charter

Recently NHS England published its Interoperability Handbook. The Handbook, in line with the ambitions laid out in Five Year Forward View, is the first in a series of guidance to aid local organisations in procuring and implementing interoperable solutions as part of their local digital roadmaps. It has been developed in conjunction with national and local organisations such as the Pioneers and Vanguards.

As part of the practical advice to local organisations, the Handbook urges providers and commissioners to refer to techUK's Interoperability Charter as part of their vendor engagement strategy. The Charter, which currently has over 60 health and social care vendor signatories, sets out five key principles for technology and information suppliers to commit to, to enable the change needed to deliver better integrated health and care.

Natalie Bateman, Head of Health, Social Care and Local Government at techUK said: 'It is encouraging to see our Charter recognised in NHS England's Interoperability Handbook. Only by the public and private sector working together can we enable the change needed to deliver better integrated health and care. That's why the industry calls on the NHS and Local Government to guarantee that; nationally defined interoperability standards are based on internationally recognised standards and real-world requirements driven by business need; and when accreditation or compliance testing is deemed necessary that it is light-touch, proportionate, open to all and free.
