NICE global care experts move to Imperial
The NICE team working with low and middle income countries to develop their health systems moves to Imperial College London
A highly specialised team of experts who support lower income countries to get value for money in their healthcare systems is moving to Imperial College London, it has been announced.
The International Decision Support Initiative, largely funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the Department for International Development, will leave but NICE’s international work will continue.
The team will move to the Institute for Global Health Innovation under Lord Ara Darzi of Denham.
NICE will take this opportunity to refocus its international work.
Sir Andrew Dillon, Chief Executive of NICE, said: “We are pleased that the important work started here at NICE will be able to benefit from the experience and knowledge of the Institute of Global Health Innovation at Imperial College.
“We are very proud of what the team has achieved here and look forward to collaborating with it as it develops in its new home.”
Dr Kalipso Chalkidou, who leads the IDSI team said: “Accessing good healthcare for you and your family is a universal ambition.
“A health system free at the point of care, like the UK NHS, is the goal of many nations. For instance, South Africa recently announced universal healthcare will be available within 10 years. We are working with the Government there to help implement this.
“Whilst maintaining our close links to the academics and professionals we have been working with, our move to Imperial with its close links to frontline NHS and its world class research teams, will enhance our offer for partner countries and our funders.”
Lord Darzi of Denham, Director of the Institute of Global Health Innovation, Imperial College London, said: “The move is a significant opportunity to build on the enormous global impact the team have fostered over the last eight years, and to drive this forward at Imperial.
“Placing the team’s unique expertise within a world-class academic setting will provide new avenues for collaboration and partnership with international funding bodies and governments.”
