National Adviser for Violence against Women, Domestic Abuse and Sexual Violence appointed

Public Services Minister Leighton Andrews has announced that Rhian Bowen-Davies has been appointed as Wales’ first National Adviser for Violence against Women and other forms of Gender-based Violence, Domestic Abuse and Sexual Violence.

The Violence against Women, Domestic Abuse and Sexual Violence (Wales) Act 2015 included the appointment of a National Adviser to drive improvements in the way services for victims and survivors of  gender-based violence, domestic abuse and sexual violence are planned, commissioned and delivered.

Ms Bowen-Davies has been Chief Executive of Calan DVS since 2013, following a five year period as Manager of Neath Women’s Aid. Earlier in her career she served as a police officer in South Wales Police, qualifying as an Independent Domestic Violence Advocate.

Leighton Andrews said:

“Ms Bowen-Davies’ expertise in the field of Violence Against Women, and her strong leadership and communication skills make her the ideal candidate for this post.

“I am very pleased Ms Bowen-Davies has accepted the responsibilities of this vitally important role as we take forward this ground-breaking legislation.”

Rhian Bowen-Davies said:

"I'm delighted to have been appointed as Wales' first National Adviser. The Act demonstrates Wales' commitment to tackling all forms of violence against women, gender-based violence, domestic abuse and sexual violence.

"My role is key in driving improvements across Wales relating to leadership and accountability at all levels and improving the consistency and quality of services for all individuals and families experiencing violence and abuse.

"I look forward to taking up this appointment and working with stakeholders and survivors to make a real difference here in Wales."
