National Programme of the Netherlands Presidency of the Council of the EU published

The Netherlands has published the national programme for its Presidency of the Council of the European Union. The publication – in four languages – takes an in-depth look at the priorities for the coming six months.

Combining European and national measures

During its Presidency the Netherlands faces the important task of helping the European Union find common solutions in turbulent times. The challenge is to remain focused on important long-running issues, even when current events appear to require all our attention. Unity and resolve are needed at all levels. The effective combination of European and national measures will form an important basis for those solutions.

The Netherlands’ priorities for its Presidency

The Netherlands has based its priorities for the Presidency on three principles: a Union that focuses on the essentials, a Union that creates innovative growth and jobs, and a Union that connects with society. The National Programme outlines the Netherlands’ position concerning each individual Council configuration and subjects that will arise during the Netherlands Presidency.

In line with trio programme

The programme ties in closely with the trio programme of the Netherlands, Slovakia and Malta, which applies from 1 January 2016 to 1 July 2017, the period during which the Netherlands, Slovakia (which holds the Presidency in the second half of 2016) and Malta (in the first half of 2017) comprise the Trio Presidency. The main priorities of the trio programme are growth, jobs, freedom, security, justice, the energy union and the Union as a strong global actor.
