National consortium to improve research visibility and collaboration
ORCID, a way of identifying researchers which enables a range of improvements to scholarly communications, is being offered to UKhigher education institutions through a new national consortium.
The agreement, negotiated by Jisc, will enable universities to benefit from significantly lower ORCID membership costs and enhanced technical support. This should support accelerated adoption and give universities a smoother path to implementing ORCID. By improving the integration of research systems and processes this will ultimately help to transform the management, re-use and efficiency of the UK’s research output.
In addition to helping fulfil the requirements of research funders such as Research Councils UK and charities, ORCID will play an important role in helping universities respond to funders’ open access policies, for example as part of the next Research Excellence Framework, and support the move towards an open culture.
More than 50 UK universities have expressed an interest in joining an ORCID consortium in 2015, with a further 22 saying they intend to join at a later stage.
