New £300,000 Welsh language fund open

The First Minister, Carwyn Jones has yesterday opened the 2015-16 round of Bwrw Mlaen’s £300,000 Innovation Fund for applications to support innovative Welsh language projects to instigate the use of the language in the community.

This fund builds on a successful bidding process for funding in 2014-15 which has seen 14 innovative projects across Wales being awarded a grant to deliver projects which promote and provide opportunities to use Welsh beyond the school gates and in every day life.

The 2015-16 fund is open to a wider cohort of applications, not just or current grant recipients, and again will seek to support Welsh language activities, that promote and facilitate the use of Welsh within communities.

Bids will need to support the current infrastructure, targeting specific groups and communities based on identified need.  The funding targets areas of Wales where Welsh is more widely spoken, such as North and West Wales, as well as places that are strategically important for the language.

First Minister, Carwyn Jones, said:

“We know that there is already a huge amount of good work going on at grass roots level.  This was clear from the amount of high quality bids we received for the current financial year. We want to build on this for the next round of the funding which will provided in 2015-16.

“The fund is designed to enable organisations to provide activities that aren’t already on offer to specific target audiences or areas at the moment.  We want these to be new, different, exciting projects that really capture people’s interest and expand the services and opportunities that are available.”

The First Minister announced the fund of £300,000 as part of Iaith Fyw: Iaith Byw – Bwrw Mlaen, a policy statement on the language which outlined the steps that will be taken to strengthen its position over the next three years.

Projects eligible for funding must support the objectives of Bwrw Mlaen, which include promoting and facilitating the use of Welsh in the community, developing Welsh language technology and maximising the link between the language and the economy.
