New President appointed to The National Library of Wales

The Deputy Minister for Culture, Sport and Tourism, Ken Skates, has announced the appointment of Rhodri Glyn Thomas as President of The National Library of Wales.

Mr Thomas’ term of appointment will begin on the 6th April 2016 and will last for four years.

As President, Mr Thomas will promote the work of the Library both in Wales and beyond. He will also represent the Library in its dealings with the National Assembly for Wales and the Welsh Government.

Mr Thomas is standing down as an Assembly Member prior to May’s elections. During his time at the National Assembly he has served as Chair of the Health, Culture and Rural Affairs Committees and as a National Assembly Commissioner. He was appointed Minister for Heritage under the One Wales Government in July 2007.  

The Deputy Minister said:

“I am pleased to announce the appointment of Rhodri Glyn Thomas as the new President of the National Library. Rhodri brings with him a wealth of experience, particularly in the area of culture and heritage, which will help to develop and widen the appeal of the library.”

Mr Rhodri Glyn Thomas AM said:

“It is a huge privilege to be asked to serve as President of The National Library of Wales. It is an essential institution which has contributed greatly to the life of the nation and I look forward to working with staff and supporters of the Library to secure its future.”

Tricia Carter, Vice-President of The National Library of Wales, said:

“On behalf of the Board of the Library, we welcome the appointment of Rhodri Glyn Thomas. His considerable experience and knowledge will greatly contribute to the Board in its role in steering the future direction of the Library. We look forward to working with him.”

Rhodri Glyn Thomas will succeed Professor Sir Deian Hopkin as President of The National Library of Wales. Professor Sir Deian Hopkin’s term as President came to an end on 30 November 2015.
