New Tourism Advisory Board members announced

The Welsh Government’s Tourism Advisory Board have met with tourism representatives in south east Wales ahead of holding their December board meeting.

The recent Board Meeting was the first for the newly appointed members, these are: Neil Rowlands; George Reid; Mandy Davies; Alun Shurmer and Karl Schmidtke.  Existing members which have been reappointed are - Margaret Llewellyn; Justin Albert; Stephen Leeke and Mike Morgan. They join existing members Nigel Morgan and Roy Noble.

This was the third of four “meet the board” meetings to be held in all four regions of Wales, with the fourth meeting to be held in Pembrokeshire in January. The meetings support the new structure of working with the regions which will deliver closer links between the industry and Government.
In addition,  and to strengthen that regional approach,  specific  Board Members will also take on a responsibility for each region with Neil Rowlands representing North Wales; George Reid South West Wales; Mandy Davies to represent South East Wales and Mike Morgan, to represent Mid Wales.

Chair of the Tourism Advisory Group, Dan Clayton Jones, said:

“As a board we’re delighted to have had the opportunity to meet with industry representatives from the area.   It was a very valuable opportunity to hear first hand from the industry about the issues affecting tourism and business in this area and we’ll continue to take our Board meeting to all regions of Wales.   I look forward to working with the new members to realise our target of 10% growth for the industry by 2020.”

Deputy Minister for Culture, Sport and Tourism, Ken Skates, said:

“I’d like to congratulate the new members to the Advisory Board on their appointment and look forward to working with them.  These are very exciting times for tourism. It seems that 2014 is proving to be an excellent year, even compared to 2013 which was a successful year in itself.  The Welsh Government values the importance of tourism, the sector has been designated as one of our nine key sectors to realise future growth for the Welsh economy and I value the wealth of experience and knowledge which the board provides. “

The establishment of the Ministerial Advisory Board on Tourism was a key recommendation of the Strategy ‘Partnership for Growth’ which was launched last year.  The role of the Board is to provide the Welsh Government with direct expert advice ensuring that the views and priorities of the industry help inform policy development as well as to ensure that activities support the growth of the tourism sector and its contribution to the Welsh economy and job creation.
