New digital distribution platform launched

We're supporting Cinegi Arts & Film to enable venues such as arts centres, pubs and libraries all over the country to become a ‘cinema’.

Working in partnership with the BFI, the programme will bring the best of the arts on film directly to local communities.

It will allow a huge variety of local venues to organise a cinema screening by browsing the catalogue of titles, selecting content and booking a programme specifically for their local audience.

Cinegi Arts & Film is an ambitious experiment that will test how a digital distribution service can bring filmed arts and cultural content, alongside BFI programming, to new and wider audiences as a shared experience in non-cinema venues.

Gill Johnson, Director of Creative Media at Arts Council England said:  “The huge success in recent years of cinema screenings of productions by companies like the National Theatre and the Royal Opera House shows there is a massive public appetite for great art on screen. Cinegi aims to go one step further by bringing art on film to everyone’s doorstep, in venues of all types and sizes, wherever in the country they happen to live. We’re delighted that so many arts companies are making their content available to support this exciting project.”

Mandy Berry, Cinegi CEO said: “Cinegi is very excited at being able to launch this Arts Council supported initiative to bring filmed performance alongside BFI content to audiences in all kinds of venues across the UK. We passionately believe that everyone should have the best possible access to the arts and it is a privilege to work with Arts Council England, the British Film Institute and the arts organisations on helping to make this a reality. This is a totally new way of securely delivering content as download over the public internet, making it easy for everyone wherever they are, to put on public screenings. We will add more content to the catalogue throughout the year and look forward to reaching audiences from Cornwall to Newcastle and discovering what they are interested in screening.”

Edward Humphrey, BFI Digital Director, said: “Britain on Film has captivated online audiences across the UK with over 22 million views in just over two years, and we’re thrilled that even more people can now come together to enjoy these amazing films communally in fantastic local venues thanks to Cinegi Arts&Film”

The platform launches with titles from major arts organisations such as the Royal Opera House, the Royal Shakespeare Company, National Theatre Live, Shakespeare’s Globe and also smaller companies like Miracle Theatre from Cornwall, alongside extraordinary archive and documentary films from the BFI’s Britain on Film collections showing over a century of life in communities across the UK.
