North Wales schools celebrate after winning anti-bullying video competition

Pupils from two North Wales schools are celebrating after winning a Welsh Government competition in which pupils in primary and secondary schools were invited to produce storyboards or film clips, which showed the causes and effects of bullying.

Year 5 and 6 pupils from Ysgol Maes Owen in Rhyl won the primary school category while the secondary school category was won by Year 9 pupils from Ysgol Syr Thomas Jones of Amlwch, Ynys Mon.

A report published by Estyn yesterday; ‘Action on bullying’ sets out a series of recommendations on what can be done to combat bullying while also identifying schools where best practice exists which, in turn, is having a positive effect on reducing cases of bullying.

Education Minister Huw Lewis said:

“I’ve seen both videos by Maes Owen and Syr Thomas Jones. I was really struck by the quality of both productions and the knowledge and enthusiasm of the pupils who were responsible for them. I’d like to congratulate both schools on their deserved wins. I know we received lots of high quality entries so all those involved can be extremely proud of this achievement.

Commenting on the Estyn report he added:

“I’d like to thank Estyn for this report.  We take all forms of bullying extremely seriously and I would encourage schools and local authorities to study the report closely, learn from those schools where best practice was observed and consider how they can implement those recommendations relevant to them”.
