ONS Crime Statistics, Year Ending June 2015

James Murphy, Associate Director – Defence and Security, responds to new crime figures.

Yesterday, the ONS released new Crime Statistics for the year ending June 2015. The figures show a 5% increase in police recorded crime compared with the previous year.

In response to the news, James Murphy, Associate Director – Defence and Security at techUK said yesterday:

"This increase in crime stats, the first for 20 years, indicates the true scale of cyber-crime and gives police chiefs a greater understanding of the problem they face. Given these crimes are often under-reported, it's likely the actual figures are even higher than those published today. The only way we can successfully tackle the growing threat to people and businesses is for police, industry and victim support to work together to better protect and prevent against such crimes."

Next week, techUK will launch a report that examines the police response to cyber-crime, and what needs to be done to tackle this growing threat.
