ONS wins global prize for communication of statistics

Statisticians at the Office for National Statistics (ONS) in Newport have been recognised for their skill in communicating statistics at a conference of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) in Geneva. The conference brings together national statistical agencies from across the world.

ONS Labour Market Analyst Jamie Jenkins and Tegwen Green from the ONS Good Practice Team were awarded top prize for their presentation on the work being done within the UK to improve the communication of ONS statistics and share best practice. ONS continues its success within this prize category, Alan Smith OBE from the Digital Publishing Division won the award in 2013 with Jamie taking the runner-up spot.

Jamie Jenkins said: "Our figures can be complicated, so we've been looking at different ways of presenting them, including the use of bold 'infographics' that tell the story easily and simply and are also great for sharing via social media. We want statistics to be easy to understand and to use, and it's great that others are adopting this approach for their work too"

The ONS Labour Market Team have been increasingly using this type of format to breakdown the statistics into a format which is easily read and understood, but also featuring a strong news angle to appeal to the media. The team have become very successful at achieving this and have inspired other business areas to follow their lead."
