Ofcom has announced the award of the first community radio licence in the Channel Islands.

The licence has been awarded to Quay FM for a service in Alderney, the most northerly of the Channel Islands.

Community radio services are provided on a not-for-profit basis focusing on the delivery of specific social benefits to a particular geographical community or a community of interest.

Last year, new legislation was passed to allow community stations to be licensed in Guernsey, Alderney and Sark. Applications for licences closed in March, and Quay FM is the first award made by Ofcom.

Quay FM will provide a community radio service catering for the people of Alderney.

Licences are awarded for a five-year period.
