Ofcom awards new community radio licences in Huddersfield and Pocklington

Ofcom has today announced the award of new community radio licences in Huddersfield and Pocklington 

Licences have been awarded to Radio Sangam, for a service in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, and to West Wolds Radio, for a service in Pocklington, East Yorkshire.

Community radio services are provided on a not-for-profit basis focusing on the delivery of specific social benefits to a particular geographical community or a community of interest.

Radio Sangam will provide a community radio service for the Indian, Pakistani and Bangladeshi communities of Huddersfield.

West Wolds Radio (West Wolds Radio Limited)

West Wolds Radio will provide a community radio service for Pocklington and surrounding villages in East Yorkshire.

The licences are awarded for a five-year period.

NOTES FOR EDITORS

1. In addition to the licence awards detailed above, Ofcom has considered five further applications in the southwestern part of West Yorkshire, but decided not to award a licence to any of the following groups:

  • Harmony FM (Huddersfield Pakistani Community Alliance), Huddersfield;
  • Radio Paigham (Radio Paigham (Huddersfield) Ltd), Kirklees;
  • Radio Safa (Safa Association Ltd), Calderdale;
  • Madina Live FM (Madina Live FM Ltd), Dewsbury and Batley; and
  • U Radio Kirklees (U Radio Ltd), Dewsbury, Batley and surrounding area.

2. In addition, Ofcom considered one application for Rossendale, but decided not to award a licence to the following group:

  • Rossendale FM (Rossendale FM Limited), Rossendale Valley (Lancashire).
