Ofcom awards three new community radio licences

Ofcom has yesterday announced the award of three new community radio licences, in Shropshire, Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire.

Licences have been awarded to Nova FM for a service in Newport, Shropshire; Radio Newark in Newark on Trent, Nottinghamshire; and Endeavour FM in Boston, Lincolnshire.

Community radio services are provided on a not-for-profit basis focusing on the delivery of specific social benefits to a particular geographical community or a community of interest.

Nova FM will provide a community radio service for the town of Newport and its surrounding villages.

Radio Newark will serve residents of Newark on Trent and surrounding villages in Nottinghamshire.

The station will serve the population of Boston and surrounding areas in south east Lincolnshire.

Licences are awarded for a five-year period.

NOTES FOR EDITORS

1. In addition to the licence awards detailed above, Ofcom considered two further applications, but decided not to award a licence to the following groups:

  • Bewdley Radio (Bewdley Community Radio Limited), Bewdley, Worcestershire
  • Cornerstone FM (Cornerstone Radio Limited), Telford, Shropshire

One other application has been rejected due to there being no suitable FM frequency available:

  • Elastic FM (Elastic FM Limited), North Bolsover District
