Ofcom releases details on UK positions for key WRC-15 issues

techUK responds to the publication of UK positions to be taken on key issues at upcoming World Radiocommunication Conference 2015 (WRC-15).

The forthcoming International Telecommunication Union (ITU) World Radiocommunication Conference 2015 (WRC-15) will take place in Geneva from 2 - 27 November 2015. It will consider a wide range of issues across a number of sector interests including mobile broadband, maritime, aeronautical, satellite and scientific use of spectrum. Ofcom has yesterday released details on the positions the UK will take on certain key issues at WRC-15.

The forthcoming World Radio Conference comes at a very important juncture in the exploitation of spectrum. Spectrum is the vital lifeblood for all wireless applications ranging from mobile and satellite communications and entertainment to emergency services radio and a range of business operational functions including for the utilities. Without it, many scientific endeavours will not be possible including understanding climate change.

techUK's Raj Sivalingam, Executive Director of Telecoms and UK Spectrum Policy Forum has commented, stating: "The next few years will see a flurry of activities involving the future use of spectrum, for example the development of next generation 5G mobile communications, innovative new satellite applications including high throughput satellites and numerous applications relating to the internet of things, public protection and disaster relief. Demand for spectrum is therefore increasing, sometimes with different services and applications seeking to use the same spectrum.

"As such, Ofcom's position in going into the WRC is a balance between these complex and conflicting demands. techUK has helped to facilitate a number of productive discussions involving our industry members, Government and Ofcom in order to shine a light on these issues, and in turn we stand ready to play a full role in evaluating the outcomes of the conference and harnessing industry perspectives. It is vital that Ofcom plays a strong and proactive role and we wish Ofcom and the UK delegation every success at the Conference."
