Ofcom is increasing its commitment to the Welsh language by implementing new standards as of yesterday.  

These include 168 commitments by Ofcom to its work in the Welsh language, such as more consumer research and information about Ofcom’s work.

This growing commitment will make it easier for consumers and businesses to engage with a range of communications issues entirely in Welsh.

Ofcom takes its Welsh language obligations very seriously, and has already integrated the language into much of its day-to-day work.

All full-time staff at Ofcom’s Wales in Cardiff are fluent Welsh speakers. People who prefer to communicate with Ofcom in Welsh are actively encouraged to do so.

Ofcom already produces many of its research publications in Welsh, including bespoke Welsh versions of its annual Communications Market Report and Connected Nations. Under the new standards, further research will be made available in Welsh.

Welsh-language speakers will soon find extra pages in Welsh on Ofcom’s website, and will be able to engage with Ofcom in Welsh via its social media channels.

In December 2016, Ofcom created its first Welsh ‘app’ for smartphones and tablets. The Ofcom Mobile and Broadband Checker enables Welsh speakers to check the quality of their mobile reception and home broadband connection.

Alison Crosland, Ofcom’s Group Director for Corporate Services said: “The Welsh language is a key part of everyday life in Wales, and people should be able to communicate with Ofcom in Welsh.

“We represent everyone in Wales, so we’re committed to increasing the services we offer to Welsh speakers.”

1. The Welsh Language Measure (2011) secured the appointment of the Welsh Language Commissioner in April 2012, an independent body with the principal aim of promoting and facilitating the use of the Welsh language.
2. The new Welsh Language Standards regime will replace Ofcom’s current Welsh language scheme.
