Ofgem Rejects calls for Energy Storage Licensing
Energy Regulator believes that Energy Storage Licensing is not “the immediate solution”
Utility Week have quoted Andy Burgess, Associate Partner, energy systems, stating Ofgem’s opposition to making Energy Storage a separate licensed activity, based on a desire to allow for competition to develop in the Energy Storage market.
Energy storage is currently licensed as a generation asset, which prohibits network companies from owning and operating the technology. Ofgem see this as allowing the market to remain competitive by preventing the immediate inclusion of regulated monopolies.
A National Infrastructure Commission report published in March called for a decrease in the regulation surrounding smart solutions in the UK, including storage, where it sees potential for the UK to be a world leader.
Government have since published a response to the NIC report, addressing the recommendations made.
