Open innovation within defence
A defence science and technology study is challenging the way defence innovates by seeking the views of the science and technology community.
Sponsored by the Ministry of Defence’s (MOD) Chief Scientific Adviser, this study will contribute to a long term science and technology (S&T) innovation plan, which aims to improve MOD’s ability to harness innovation to deliver sustainable operational advantage.
Recognising wider best practice, MOD’s Research and Development (R&D) Board agrees that a more ‘open’ approach to innovation is needed, for example, working with a range of partners/suppliers to create and exploit new ideas, while sharing the risks and rewards.
The Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) is working with two companies, 100%Open and Aleph Insights, to help MOD understand the defence enterprise’s readiness for open innovation. The aim is to get a broad perspective on where MOD stands today on open innovation and some of the key barriers/enablers to MOD’s adoption of open innovation in the future.
At a Dstl supplier event in July 2015, defence science and technology suppliers took part in a workshop around open innovation within MOD to begin the study. The next stage of the study is to seek a wider range of views from suppliers through an online, ‘open innovation readiness’ survey. This will inform the development of the long term plan for MOD.
