Opposition to Trade Union Bill

Scottish Government talks with key stakeholders.

Ongoing opposition to Westminster’s Trade Union Bill has been highlighted ahead of further talks with the STUC this afternoon (Thursday).

The meeting is the first of a short series of discussions on opposition to the Bill and ways to mitigate its effects on the productive relationship with Trade Unions in Scotland. Talks with local government representatives are planned for the coming weeks.

Cabinet Secretary for Fair Work, Skills and Training Roseanna Cunningham said:

“The Scottish Government has actively sought to promote the very constructive role trade unions play in the workplace, in the wider economy and civil society in reducing both inequality and building our economic success.

“The number of days lost to strike action has been reduced in Scotland by 84 per cent through partnership working rather than sanctioning workers and the work of the Fair Work Convention will firm up fair working practices in a modern Scotland.

“There is clear opposition across Scottish society to the UK Trade Union Bill and I am very pleased to welcome the STUC to a formal discussion on what more can be done to block the Bill or, should it be pushed through, how to mitigate the damage it will cause.

“We have lodged a further memorandum on the Bill with the Scottish Parliament and its consideration by the Devolution (Further Powers) Committee will provide an opportunity to properly consider the Bill on a parliamentary platform.

“However, the only way to truly protect workers in Scotland is to fully devolve trade union powers.”
