Overground upgrade work to start next week
The route between Gospel Oak and Barking will close from 4 June as part of a major upgrade project.
There will be phased closures from Saturday 4 June, with the line set to be closed for a total of eight months while the vital work is carried out.
The project, funded by TfL and the Department for Transport, will see the introduction of new four-car electric trains from January 2018, replacing the existing two-car diesel trains, which will help meet growing passenger demand.
Network Rail will lower four sections of track, install structures to carry the overhead wires and rebuild four bridges. The work will take place in two phases and result in changes to train services.
From Saturday 4 June to Sunday 25 September there will be no service between South Tottenham and Barking. Trains will run on weekdays between Gospel Oak and South Tottenham, but not at weekends.
TfL will provide rail replacement buses along the route.
From Monday 26 September to February 2017, the line will be fully closed in both directions from Gospel Oak to Barking.
From June until September, there will be two replacement bus services between Walthamstow Central and Barking, and between Gospel Oak and Seven Sisters (for South Tottenham).
There will be no replacement bus service between South Tottenham and Walthamstow Queen's Road stations. Customers wanting to travel to these stations should use the Victoria line, which is a faster alternative.
TfL's Director of London Overground Mike Stubbs said: 'Along with Network Rail, we have been publicising the work and the alternative travel arrangements and have held drop-in sessions at all 12 stations along the route to ensure customers are well-informed.
'We know there will be disruption and would like to thank customers in advance for their patience while this essential work takes place.'
Regular pay as you go users of the Gospel Oak to Barking line will be automatically refunded the additional cost of travel via Zone 1 by Tube or rail.
From February 2017 onwards, further works to prepare the line for electric trains will take place during evenings and weekends and will be completed by the end of June 2017.
