PCS Union - National Gallery strikers to bring 1,000 sunflowers to May Day march

National Gallery strikers will bring 1,000 handmade sunflowers to Trafalgar Square on Friday for their latest strike that coincides with the annual May Day march.

The demonstration will end with a rally from 2pm in the square, opposite the gallery, and marchers will be asked to show their support by holding up the sunflowers made by the strikers.

The union's members have already held 22 days of industrial action since February against plans to privatise all the gallery's visitor services.

The invitation to tender is due to be published just days before the general election in what the union says is a cynical move to bury the issue and tie the hands of the next government.

PCS general secretary Mark Serwotka said: "This privatisation plan risks the worldwide reputation of one of our country's greatest cultural institutions and must be halted so it can be fully reviewed by the next government."
