PM call with US Vice President Biden

Statement following a call between David Cameron and Joe Biden on the political talks in Northern Ireland.

A Downing Street spokesperson said:

The Prime Minister spoke to Vice President Biden this afternoon regarding the political talks in Northern Ireland.

The Prime Minister and the Vice President agreed on the importance of the parties engaging fully in the process and were positive that progress could be made.

The Vice President noted that Senator Gary Hart, Secretary Kerry’s Special Representative, was in Northern Ireland and they agreed that the US and UK would continue to work closely to support the parties’ efforts in the talks process.

They also spoke about Ebola and the Vice President welcomed the UK’s leading role on this issue.

They discussed the threat posed by ISIL and agreed that both countries should keep working together and with international partners to defeat this terrorist group.

Lastly the Vice President welcomed the outcome of the referendum on Scotland and reiterated the importance to the United States of its close alliance with the United Kingdom.
