PM meeting with UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon

The Prime Minister David Cameron met UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon at the 69th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) in New York. (Yesterday)  

A Number 10 spokesperson said:

The Prime Minister met with UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon earlier today where they discussed a number of issues including how to deal with the global threats from ISIL (Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant), Ebola and climate change. The also discussed the need to create a bold and inspiring set of post-2015 global development goals.

The PM and Secretary General agreed on the urgent need to tackle climate change. The Prime Minister thanked the UN Secretary General for convening today’s climate summit, re-iterated the UK’s leadership on cutting carbon emissions and pursuing green growth and highlighted the need for all countries to make concrete, ambitious commitments to ensure a global deal next year.

On the threat from ISIL, the UN Secretary General gave his condolences on the death of British national David Haines and said he fully supported the Prime Minister’s leadership on this issue. On Syria, the PM said that President Assad’s brutality was a key driver of extremism in the region.

On Ebola, the PM and UN Secretary General agreed that the world needs urgently to scale up its response to the crisis in West Africa. The PM welcomed the efforts of the UN system, highlighted the UK commitment to deliver a 700 bed facility in Sierra Leone and urged all countries to contribute urgently to stemming the spread of the disease.

On the post-2015 development goals, both leaders agreed on the need for a clear, concise and inspiring set of goals and agreed to work with international partners to achieve this over the next year.

The Secretary General also thanked the Prime Minister for his leadership on Somalia and both leaders said they hoped tomorrow’s high level meeting would keep up the momentum towards long-term security and stability.
