PM phone call with UN Secretary-General: 22 July 2016

PM Theresa May spoke with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon who congratulated her on her appointment as Prime Minister.

A Downing Street spokesperson said recently (23 July 2016):

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called the Prime Minister yesterday to congratulate her on her appointment.

The Secretary-General said it was a privilege to be able to count on Britain as a key member of the United Nations in tackling shared global challenges and crises, for example those in Syria and Somalia. The Secretary-General praised the UK for its global leadership, particularly on international development.

They agreed that the UK and UN would continue to work closely together on our shared objectives of peace and security, development and human rights.

The Prime Minister assured the Secretary-General that the UK remained firmly committed to working with and through the UN, and would continue to be an outward looking country, playing an expansive and ambitious global role.

The Prime Minister said she was proud of the UK’s leading role on international development and reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to spend 0.7 per cent of our national income on aid.

They concluded by looking forward to meeting at the G20 meeting in China in September.
